The concept

The TerraCare concept

Central tire pressure regulation technology only makes sense if it is not limited to the tractor alone. The original TerraCare central tire inflation technology consists of an Airbumper (a weight with an integrated compressor that serves as both a compressor and a pressure reservoir), an intelligent control system that precisely regulates the pressure on all defined axles, and maintenance-free, high-quality components. Not all machines are uniformly equipped with tire pressure regulation technology, particularly in larger fleets—partly due to the high investment costs for compressors and pressure reservoirs when multiple tractors are involved.

With the TerraCare Airbumper—a combination of a weight, compressor, and reservoir—you can cost-effectively and efficiently implement central tire inflation technology for multiple tractor-trailer combinations without significant setup time.

As an alternative to the Airbumper, additional compressor modules can be used; the tractor’s compressor handles the inflation of the system.

Intelligent air distribution

Air is either supplied via the tractor’s own compressor or via the TerraCare Airbumper, which not only builds up pressure but can also store air reserves for rapid availability. The desired air volume on the individual axles is controlled via valve boxes.

The concept

The components of the TerraCare central tire inflation system

Airbumper: Weight, compressor & reservoir

The combination of front weight, compressor, and air reservoir ensures maximum flexibility in air supply. With an intake capacity of 1,080 or 2,500 l/min, the tires of the tractor and trailer can be inflated in the shortest possible time—for example, from 0.8 bar to 2.1 bar.

One control system for all axles

A single, simple control system allows all axles to be set to the desired pressure. Speed- and position-dependent pressure adjustments for automatic road and field detection enhance user-friendliness.

Maintenance-free components

Maintenance-free rotary unions and stainless-steel components ensure maximum service life and eliminate additional operating costs.

Central control boxes & valve units

Central control boxes or valve units minimize the need for complex compressed air piping. This also significantly reduces installation costs.

Control boxes for each vehicle

The control boxes mounted on each vehicle not only allow for easy, cross-vehicle use, but also store all pressure settings and parameters; these can be accessed immediately via the control terminal on the tractor.

Our practical tip

By correctly using a CTIS solution for tractors and trailers, you can save up to 10% on fuel costs per year. CTIS also safeguards yield potential in pastures and fields and actively prevents irreparable soil compaction. You can calculate this quickly and easily with our calculator.

Background

Soil compaction – what’s behind it

Soil compaction leads to a significant reduction in the water and air storage capacity of the topsoil. Highly sensitive crops such as grains, corn, and many others are very vulnerable to this. This results in reduced root penetration and stress during periods of drought. Soil compaction also contributes to climate change; reduced gas exchange in the soil due to a lack of pores can increase the formation of climate-damaging gases.

Soil structure must be preserved, even in modern agriculture

Soil compaction is not caused solely by improper tillage practices or one-sided crop rotations. It is the ever-larger and heavier machinery that has the biggest impact on agricultural yield potential. Extreme weather events, becoming more prevalent due to climate change, have an additional impact on changes in soil structure.

For example, periods of heavy rain lead to the leaching of fine particles from the topsoil and to the clogging of vital soil pores. Crops require an aerated soil structure to ensure an ideal supply of nutrients and capillary water through their vital fine roots.

Especially at field headlands, plant height and yield tend to lag behind those of the crops growing in the interior of the field. This is primarily due to frequent passes by machines that work the field or harvest the crops.

Bodenverdichtung auf einem landwirtschaftlichen Feld

Soil compaction permanently alters yield potential and cannot be reversed

Studies have shown that 10–20% of the total agricultural land (including grassland) is now so heavily compacted that full yield potential can no longer be realized. Even though compacted areas can now be detected using modern sensor technology, it is no longer possible to restore a soil structure that is ideal for crops.

FAQs

Answers to the most frequently asked questions

What sets TerraCare apart from a traditional tire pressure control system?

TerraCare views tire pressure regulation not as a standalone solution, but as a comprehensive system for the entire operation. While traditional tire pressure regulation systems often address only individual axles or focus exclusively on the tractor, TerraCare provides a coordinated solution for the tractor, trailer, and (depending on the application) other towed equipment as well. This is one of the greatest benefits of our central tire inflation solution.

In farming, the tractor rarely works alone. Heavy trailers, slurry tanks, dump trucks, or other towed machinery are frequently in use. These vehicles exert high axle loads on the ground and can contribute significantly to soil compaction.

A central tire inflation system installed only on the tractor does improve traction and protects the soil around the tractor. However, the full benefit is realized only when the tractor trailer also operates at the correct tire pressure.

That’s why TerraCare offer a comprehensive solution that considers both the tractor and the trailer together. This ensures that the entire system operates more efficiently, more economically, and with less impact on the soil.

A tractor carries only a portion of the total load. A large portion of the weight rests on the trailer or towed equipment, especially during transport operations, manure spreading, or harvesting operations.

If the tractor operates in the field with reduced tire pressure while the trailer continues to run at high road pressure, a large portion of the soil-conservation potential remains untapped. The trailer’s tires then have a smaller contact area and continue to exert high ground pressure.

That is why tire pressure regulation technology makes sense not only on the tractor, but wherever heavy loads are transferred to the ground via tires.

One of the advantages of our central tire inflation system is that TerraCare can be customized depending on the vehicle combination. The tractor, trailer, and other machinery (if applicable) are integrated into the overall system via components such as controls, air lines, valves, rotary joints, and compressors.

Operation is centralized and as simple as possible for the driver. Depending on the model, different pressure profiles can be stored for road and field use. This allows tire pressure to be quickly and reliably adjusted to the specific working conditions.

Intelligent air distribution means that the available compressed air is distributed efficiently and as needed to the respective axles. It is crucial that pressure adjustment occurs quickly, evenly, and reliably, especially with large tire volumes or multiple axles.

TerraCare ensures that the air goes where it’s needed. This reduces changeover times between road and field. It also prevents individual tires from being inflated or deflated unevenly.

The right TerraCare solution depends on several factors: vehicle type, tire size, application, proportion of transport, existing compressed air supply, and desired usability comfort. The best way to determine the right solution is to work with TerraCare. This results in a system tailored to the vehicle and economically viable for your operation.
